As a designer and architect I am always devoted in good design, applaud and support any new products that fellow architects and designers introduce. I find myself though in the past year or so to struggle with new clients as far as budget is concerned. Never before I had to make such a big budget and project cuts and of course this is due to the economy slowdown of the US. Even worst, I end up having to cut a big part of each interior project when I begin to introduce furniture pieces from DWR or Knoll International due to the high costs of the products and that gets me frustrated since things do not look the same anymore. So the alternative is either use something completely different (which does not make me happy nor my clients) or use quality reproductions. Few of the sites with reproductions such as KMPfurniture or moderncollections are few among other companies I like that carry those same products in a fraction of the price. Is it such a big crime to use reproductions? If Dwr or Knoll lowered their prices a little bit I would definitely have supported them but leave me no other option. Please share your thoughts on this. Thanks.

How would you feel if someone duplicated one of your projects?

That's probably one of the best topics posted in this forum intelectual property and architecture. If everybody that goes to school is taught architecture as a "copy paste" intellectualy charged by the mind of the student then why in everyday practice can it be perfect ground for lawsuits? And most important there is not a single architectural masterpiece out there that is done by one hand.

There will always be some form of copying in any profession. But when it comes down to pure plagerism and using other people's work for our credit, that's where the ethical line is drawn. I've had the unfortune of working for such a company. My stance on their practice alienated me from the rest of the office, but it was necessary. I did not want to be a part of selling previously "custom" designed projects to another owner as another "custom" design, what made that feat worst was the two homes are located next to one another. Copying plans of other architects and changing the elevation and hock it as their own creation. Claiming design credit for work not done by them. Even their website is a huge misrepresentation of work. Over a short period of time, their reputation was down the toilet.
