first off i will apologise for using something as useless as sketchup.
i'm looking for something a bit more advanced than sketchup i feel i have reached it's limits now and want a 3d design program for use in designing exhibition stands.
main features i would like to be able to use are the inclusion of graphics onto faces of objects.
lighting effects including light cast from objects such as spot lights.
any advice would be very usefull

i always use 3ds max to draw such pictures,and rend using VRAY.
i hope it can help you well. |

Rhinoceros Naturally!
you can do your rendering with Vray, Brazil, Maxwell, Flamingo, Fryrender, Indigo, Accurender nXt (soon)
animation (see Bongo)
as well as stay in it to do ALL your CADD work, as if not more accurately and faster and more powerfully than other cads. (try cage edits and network curve surfaces with history enabled). page layouts, line widths, hatches all compatible too
good luck
oh and it is 150$ for a full commercial lic. as a student

No reason you can't do that in SketchUp. Model in SU and then render in Kerkythea and spend nothing. Why would you think that you can't do it in SU?
Just playing with those shapes and here is where I was in 5 minutes in SU and 45 seconds in kerkythea.
Sure Rhino would work, Viz/Max, Maya or Form-Z. Just saying this can be done in SU. |

| You could try the ViewBuild Professional modeling software. It retails for NZ$400 (about US$300) and does everything you are talking about plus more. Check it out at www.viewbuild.co.nz |
