I have a 50's bungalow that I bought that has a BORING and outdated front facade. We are planning on painting and landscaping but we'd really like to do something to add some character to the front. One of the things we are considering is adding a second gable (see first photo for what it looks like now). I have attached a 3D model to show what we are thinking about doing. Essentially we'd like to add a second gable with a veranda underneath. I think it really adds a lot to the look of the house but the question I want an answer to is why do I not see this style of roof on any other house? Drainage can be dealt with so I don't think that's an issue. What about snow loads?

Thanks in advance.

The issue is drainage. You can add a cricket between the gable, but the issue will be ice damming.

I think if you extend the existing gable and work on the detailing of it, you might get what you are looking for. OR even a nested gable over the entry to provide a protection to the front door. Work on the sequence of entry.

I would add a trellis where you are proposing the gable. It will break the harsh sunlight in the summer and visual interest other times.

The idea I am proposing is a classic Bunglow front porch detail.

Sort of what the porch area could be....

with the trellis to one side (in craftsman style not Victorian ) .......

But this is all personal opinion.

I agree with phansford,

Build a gabled porch over the entry and a trellis to the right. What you are proposing not only would be a problem but also does not help the looks any. Also work on the landscaping. Details will add character. Extend the overhang on the gables and add brackets.

I'm going to work on a different design using the suggestion you have made. We did think about a nested gable over the doorway that came out enough to cover the doorway but our thought was that it would only really accentuate the unbalance between the right and left side. Of course it would give a lot more presence to the doorway which is definitely one of the design goals but I kind of feel like the left side would be so far back that it would make the front look lopsided.

Another consideration is that the front of the house is North facing. My original design with the veranda would probably have made the living room much darker. My question is, how do you avoid losing light and still add to the left side?

All the left side needs is a better paint job and plantings, maybe some detail.

You don't want to try and force symmetry where it does not work.
