I need the size and spacing for rafters for a bow roof. The building will be 34 feet wide by 60 feet long. The lower end of the rafters will be bolted via metal plates to an 8 inch wide by 12 inch high concrete footer that runs around the building. The total height of the building will be 20 feet at the peak.

The gluelam arched rafters I would like to use will be 1 ½ inches by 5 ½ inches the spacing between rafters I’m not sure about. The roofing will the painted steel on strapping that is Appropriate for the spacing of the rafters so this will be a light weight roof.

The snow load in this area is 60lbs. But this roof should be steep enough so that snow load won’t be a problem.

My experience has been that the less people know about design and building the stronger they make things. I’m trying to make this as an inexpensive structure for storage. Anybody out there had any hands on with these type of rafters?

So I guess we don't need anyone with experience, degree or professional license according to your logic. May be you should ask this at some knitting or dog training forum as the chance of getting advices from someone with buliding and design experience there will be less.. and per your logic your building will be stronger.

That’s what I have seen of many people that have all school learning and no practical experience. On the other hand I have worked with a lot of engineers who have had say, ten years or more working the field that have been exceptional in design and knowledge.

Many people with little or no practical experience tend to way over design something through lack of both practical experience and knowledge. Anyone that questions this, like you are probably new to the trade, but with time you will understand what I’m talking about. Good luck.

The people who provide gluelam rafters usually have an engineer who can properly design them. The math is simple but we would need to know the properties of the beams and the proposed design.

Well,
I am in this trade for over 25 years. I have seen PHd engineers who understand all the chemical /physical properties of construction materials but with no real world experienece and I have also seen master carpenters who seemed to know a lot of hands on details/design inside out,( putting those PHds to shame ) until a major screw up happened due to lack of deeper understanding of physic /chemistry properties of construction materials and building design.

I hope we can agree we need "people with experience in building and design not people who finished school with no practical experience."

Thanks
