Well I finally put it all together. I bought the piece of land 6 years ago, and since then have been saving and looking for the best way to make my dream home reality.
2 years ago I decided that I would take the leap and build it myself (and the help of friends) to avoid the insane market prices. No cutting corners, no shotty contractors, and a controlled budget. So I have read hundreds of books on the subject, and am always looking for more information and ideas. My current guide to building my home is "Unwrapping: Hook & Build Building System." If any of you have also read this book, or complete a project or your dream home using this system, I would definitely like to hear from you. Not only is my home going to be high quality and put up in minimal time, it will also be affordable and customized. All the best and happy home building.

A pre-fab wood (glu-lam) frame that's connected by bolts...interesting but why stop there. They design, build and ship pre-fab homes. The whole kit and kaboodle...but then, it takes away all the fun of connecting to city sewer, water, then electric, gas, telephone and cable services, to new panels, switch gear, transformers, backflow preventors, etc, etc,...then running the plumbing and electrical conduit, the subfloor, wall sheathing, partitions, roof sheathing, roofing, insulation, and then the cabinetry, door frames, window frames, all the outlets, vents, pans, diffusers, fixtures, appliances...and then we begin the finishes. From stone to gypsum "sheetrock", carpet to wood floors, base molding to crown molding, smooth finish to knockdown texture, light fixtures, doors and windows...
Not to mention, just trying to figure out which one of the thousands of materials, sizes, loads, capacities, brands, etc, etc...of any single item I just listed. And this is just a brief synopsis of some items that go into contstruction. And of course, from my perspective, then some of us start to examine the design of the layout of spaces and final aesthetic of the finished product. It's not rocket science for sure...but it's not for everyone. Caveat emptor...! Best to hire professionals, or pre-fab complete product...with warranties. My two cents worth...best of luck.
