I do wish I could get Kevin to correct the spelling of "liars" in the title of this thread. . .

Four interesting and ironic quotes...from the last 24 hours...I tend to agree with at this moment...

My favorite radio station...Air America Radio, quoting a guest...paraphrased as best I can...
"Based on their performance in the debates, ANY of the four Republican candidates must be considered 'front runners' over all of the Democratic hopefuls at this point." and..."The difference at this point is leadership." (or did I hear it wrong, on this excellent, wonderful, common sense-liberal radio station?)

Overheard quote..."The Democrats will negate each other, opening the door for a Republican President."

NY Daily News, page 30 Enemy of My Enemy...by James Gordon Meek
"Al Qaeda's Iraq franchise is led by Egyptian Abu Hamza al-Masri and is stocked with Arabs from around the Middle East.
On Tuesday, the Islamic Army of Iraq issued a blithering statement that catalogued years of attacks by Al Qaeda against Iraqi Sunnis, pointing out that many who were slain were unarmed or in mosques."....Two officials said some analysts predict this "rift" between foreign and Iraqi guerillas will widen if U.S. forces return home."

So if America leaves, Iraqis may solve their own problems? Yes!
And will Al Qaeda then turn to trying to attack America, again? Praobably Yes, but I ask, when did they stop trying?

Amazing quote, a prophetic quote of sorts, from a "Bucko" on a Japanese forum...

..."It makes me wonder what qualities it takes in populations of people who were once at war to eventualy embrace friendship? And what factors cause groups to never find peace?"

To me, the answer to this question might be the singular most important lesson we can try and learn from history, for a better world.

Your thoughts?

I'll think about that. I'm afraid that too many of us (me included) know too little of human history.

I've been reading the interesting social history called "Collapse," by professor of geography (UCLA) Jared Diamond. Although it is actually a study of how and why some societies succeed and others fail, it necessarily uses as examples various isolated groups, on places like Easter Island, New Guinea, Iceland, and Greenland, and other less isolated groups like the Anasazi, the Maya, and the competing neighbors on Hispaniola, the Caribbean island that is home to both Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

There are a number of differeing examples among these groups of kinds of relations with other groups, and various kinds of competition and animosity, as well as kinds of cooperation and co-existence.

Last week, we had a military court rule in favor of two Guantanamo detainees. This week, we have another rebuke of military courts sidestepping the Constitution in the excuse of the "War on Terror" giving the Executive unlimited powers.

Court rules in favor of enemy combatant
By ZINIE CHEN SAMPSON, Associated Press Writer
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070612/ap_on_re_us/enemy_combatant

The three-judge panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the government should charge Ali al-Marri, a legal U.S. resident and the only suspected enemy combatant on American soil, or release him from military custody.

The federal Military Commissions Act doesn't strip al-Marri of his constitutional right to challenge his accusers in court, the judges found in Monday's 2-1 decision.

"Put simply, the Constitution does not allow the President to order the military to seize civilians residing within the United States and then detain them indefinitely without criminal process, and this is so even if he calls them 'enemy combatants,'" the court said.

Such detention "would have disastrous consequences for the Constitution — and the country," Judge Diana G. Motz wrote in the majority opinion, which was joined by Judge Roger Gregory. Judge Henry E. Hudson, a federal judge in Richmond, dissented.

"This is a landmark victory for the rule of law and a defeat for unchecked executive power," al-Marri's lawyer, Jonathan Hafetz, said in a statement. "It affirms the basic constitutional rights of all individuals — citizens and immigrants — in the United States."

We didn't know what we had, till it was gone, and maybe now it is swinging back!?

Ed, given time it is, as you say, "swinging back", but unfortunately all Bush has to do is to press the button.

the European Parliament has accepted the full report on America's concentration camps in Europe. Those kidnapped and tortured include children as young as SEVEN YEARS OLD.

the laughable anti-Russian propaganda got a response on two levels: firstly the new Russian missile test (which worked - unlike the garbage that Bush is trying to force Europe to buy which could not be tested because it was not up to the job) and, secondly, Putin has replied:

Quote:
“Unilateral and frequently illegitimate actions have not resolved any problems. Moreover, they have caused new human tragedies and created new centers of tension. Judge for yourselves---wars as well as local and regional conflicts have not diminished. More are dying than before. Significantly more, significantly more!

Today we are witnessing an almost uncontained hyper use of force – military force – in international relations, force that is plunging the world into an abyss of permanent conflicts.

We are seeing a greater and greater disdain for the basic principles of international law. And independent legal norms are, as a matter of fact, coming increasingly closer to one state’s legal system. One state and, of course, first and foremost the United States, has overstepped its national borders in every way. This is visible in the economic, political, cultural and educational policies it imposes on other nations. Well, who likes this? Who is happy about this?

In international relations we increasingly see the desire to resolve a given question according to so-called issues of political expediency, based on the current political climate. And of course this is extremely dangerous. It results in the fact that no one feels safe. I want to emphasise this – no one feels safe! Because no one can feel that international law is like a stone wall that will protect them. Of course such a policy stimulates an arms race.

I am convinced that we have reached that decisive moment when we must seriously think about the architecture of global security.”

Incidentally, a Government Minister in Kuwait has publicly announced that Kuwaiti territory may not be used by the US for an attack on Iran.

Just about the only country which seemed to welcome Bush in Europe was tiny Albania.

Here is how they did it:

http://www.repubblica.it/2006/05/gallerie/esteri/bush-orologio/1.html

yes, it does look as if the Albanians stole Bush's watch.

As for the media, the following is the view of Tony Blair:

Quote:
Tony Blair hinted today at new restrictions on internet journalism, saying online news coverage had become "more pernicious and less balanced" than traditional political reporting.

In a farewell lecture on public life, he said that much of the British media behaved like a "feral beast, just tearing people and reputations to bits".

But he had particularly harsh words for non-traditional media outlets, particularly the internet.

"It used to be thought - and I include myself in this - that help was on the horizon," he said.

"New forms of communication would provide new outlets to by-pass the increasingly shrill tenor of the traditional media.

British media always had a "shrill tenor" when talking about traitors, from Lord Haw-Haw to "Blood Price" Tony.

Rich...The American media has always been kind to Tony Blair.

Yes, we knew he was/is in disfavor with Europeans and the English themselves, but I can't remember any major negative press against him, over here.

Today I read where he himself may have objected to the Bush-Iraqi followup plan. Possibly this is true, possibly this is propaganda spin...I have always had a positive perception of him.

http://www.comcast.net/news/international/europe/index.jsp?cat=EUROPE&fn=/2007/06/16/691710.html

But then again, per my regular self, slow on the uptake, minutes late, dollars short, running on empty, and no pot to pee for my single-digit-midget! What to do?

PS...great new song, heard it today..."You say you want to make, a memory, you say you want to steal, a piece of time...." another Bon Jovi sensation!?

I like Milhouse's dad singing "Can I borrow a feeling. . .?"
