I was looking at a '40s house recently and the agent said that the wall were coated in something called homostate, which was used instead of plaster in that era. Does anyone know what this is? I googled the word and couldn't find it so I may be spelling it incorrectly. Thanks.

You may have seen Homasote panels. They are a type of fiber board made from recycled paper products.

Here is web site:

it's crap...worse material around. Get it wet and it might as well have been paper walls...

Then it could be a sign that the rest of the 1940s house is poorly constructed. Do you know how to remove it and put something else up? Is it expensive to do this? thanks so much!

Well, to be fair there are positives...it is recycled paper and therefore a good way to "contribute" to the environment. But typically, homasote bags, sags, warps, whatever under it's own weight and with a lot of humidity. If done correctly it should be attached directly to plywood...
