How does an american citizen get an opportunity to travel to Cuba?
As an architect, I want to see the island before McDonald's gets there and changes everything. |

Hi
I visited Cuba 3 years ago and spent 1 week living in the old district of Havana with a cuban family. It is definately worth a visit to see the architecture as it wont all be there for long because many buildings are collapsing as little to no maintenance is carried out. Some buildings have no facade with all the rooms exposed and people still living in them ( Gordon Matta-Clark would have loved it)
I met a few Americans whilst I was there. Many had travelled out of the US to Madrid or I think even Mexico before flying on to Cuba. Im not sure how you obtain the Visa as I got mine in the UK before travelling but Im sure that you can get this in spain or even mexico at the local consulate. They do not stamp your passport the visa is a seperate piece of paper which means that when you return to the states they are none the wiser.
When I was there I was lucky enough to admiring the Barcadi building in Havana at the same time as the care take for the building walked by. He showed me around and took me to the top of the art deco building to the tower which has the barcardi bat on top. The view of Havana from this building is amazing.

go to some place like canada or mexico that has flights to cuba...
strictly speaking US citizens are not supposed to go to cuba but you won't get too much of a hassle for the stamp on your passport unless you are wearing your che gravera t shirt.... |

| I still have not had the opportunity to travel to Cuba. This subject is now 28 months old. Lots of things have transpired since then, good and bad, but I still have a chance to beat McDonalds to Cuba, don't I? |
