Please give your opinion here. I just want to know from different view.
My opinion is tourism. Oil brings money, people spend it. what left?...that's another story.

1. Lots of money available for investment
2. Prospect of increased profits [more!!! money]
3.Willingness to take a risk via unique architectural designs, to attract tenants, users, etc.
4. Obviously a need is present for vairous reasons-- no one builds just for the sake of building and spending money! |

Many of the countries surrounding Dubai are very conservative and so the rich people need a place they can play where their fellow poor citizens will not see them.
"no one builds just for the sake of building and spending money!"
rich people do
The same for any boom town people want to get in on the action.

there is TONS of cash on the market these days... it makes it very easy to invest and do so quickly...
dubai also has a very unique real estate situation- since the royal family basically owns everything they give 'free leases' to developers to put up building projects... the prospect of free land without the worries of negotiating with various groups and government organizations is very appealing
of course this comes with a price- if a project doesn't move forward fast enough the royals can step in and simply take the land away- even if foundations are in the ground and steel is going up... so its pretty risky in that way
you also have extremely cheap and somewhat intimidated labor that makes these super developments much cheaper and less threatened by labor disputes since entire crews can by replaced over night...
another interesting thing is that many properties simply sit empty waiting for that day when the build out of dubai is more complete and the prices for those properties skyrocket...
even though very little is built in dubai without a line of prospective tenants that doesn't mean those tenants will ever move in...
for as much work as my firm does over there i always get the feeling that the whole place is on the edge of a - scam rip-off - and a bad event like a labor uprising, terror attack of some kind, or construction debacle like a major collapse could destabilize the entire construction industry there

the main goal is to attract tourists, since according to analysts Dubai's known oil reserves get tapped. To develop its tourism industry, Dubai's developers are reshaping the urban landscape in order to win tourists not only from the Middle East, but from Europe and even Asia, where rapid economic development is creating a new wealthy class.

the irony of course is that all of those tourists would presumably be transported to this tourist destination using the only known fuel that could get them there comfortably- OIL....
developing tourism to plan for the future when oil runs out because too many tourists are travelling all of the city/state/country/globe in extremely inefficient modes of transport....
talk about sustainability |

would you ever choose Dubai for your summer holidays? It all looks so fake, so Las Vegas -as solidred mentioned. I still prefer the Creek islands although they don't shape as fish.

what do you mean "how the clients say"?
the firm i work for does alot of work in dubai- much of what is designed is client driven.... dubai isn't the dreams of architects being built it is the dreams of clients |

I saw a television documentary which followed some clients and architects in Dubai during the development of a project. It was uneasy viewing: architect taking the concept 'architect as client's servant' almost too literally.
"Tea sir? Yes, certainly I'll put a methingummyjig over the entrance."
..."Sure. In orange. And two sugars."

i was involved in a proposal for a huge hospital project...
there were basically 2 major design features...
1,000,000 sq ft and looks mediterranian
that was about it.... it is quite disturbing indeed |
