Hi,
I found your discussions on chajjas for sun protection interesting. You see, I am from Allahabad,India, and i grew up seeing Colonial Architecture around me. One of the unique things the British architects devised was the Verandah around the whole residence, which protected the east, south and the west side from the hot sun, and also allowed people to sit in it to enjoy a cool breeze, or the rain without getting wet or just use it as circulation space. In summers, the sun would be kept out, while the low winter sun could come in to warm the rooms too.
I think it is unique solar shading device.
I agree that everywhere people have had to deal with the sun, but mostly in northern countries, it was to let in the sun rather than to keep it out. So shades were not incorporated into the building. Because it was cold, they also needed to keep out the rain, so they made air- tight windows.
Sun need not be kept out only with a shade, window sizes and positions will also keep out the sun. |

Coming from a tropical country where there is almost always sun and rain , i consider of absolute inportance to incorporate the design of structures incorporated with the building design, to protect it like a skin from the rain, sun, etc,
And I wonder why if in nature everything seem to flow and move with the air, rain and the sun, why buildings could not be like that?
