I needed help to identify malls or markets around the world which are dedicated only to construction goods. I am a student from india curently working on my thesis on a specialty construction mall/market.
Historically, in our country, the kings would dedicate certain areas for craftsmen and their families to work and setup their business, and the entire area would thus become the one stop place for all construction materials. Such areas dedicated to hardware, copperware, pottery still exist in the core areas of cities. Time has travelled, and materials have changed and so have construction techniques. Typically, in an urban Indian city, there now exists a wholesale market for wood, ply, steel, cement etc. However furnishings like glass, aluminium, furniture, upholstery, fittings, hardware, tiles are sold through numerous small shops which are scattered in the city and a consumer has to run through congested traffic to select his wares. There is no organised retail in this sector yet.
Thus I am keen to know how the scene works in other countries. How easily can a person select a new doorknob..or a new pane? are there speciality markets for construction goods? where can i find such examples?
Thankyou..
