Hi,
I am interested in 3D modeling of interior designs for both domestic and commercial applications. I have some experience of 3D modeling in Microstation for engineering purposes, but not for interior designs. My goal is to create lifelike 3D models for demonstration purposes. I would like to be able to include the following features:-
1) Walkthrough facility, in real time if possible.
2) Realistic external and internal lighting effects with variable lighting intensity.
3) A Cell Library with a large selection ready modeled furniture, light fittings etc.
4) A large selection of ready installed renders, plus the ability to convert digital photographs into User Specific Renders.
5) A good selection of tutorials available either ready supplied or www.
What I need is some advice please. I have the following questions:-
a) Is there an Industry Standard Program that the majority of designers use? So far I have considered TurboCAD and MacDraft.
b) Which Program is currently the "Rolls Royce" of the interior designer's world?
c) Is it still true that Mac's are better than Windows systems for running graphics packages, and if so why? I am about to buy a new laptop and cannot decide between Mac and Windows based.
d) Are there any specific points I should consider when buying the laptop? Is a good/fast gaming card necessarily suited to running 3D graphics programs? Which type memory should I spend my money on?

I'm a 3D designer and have created numerous relistic interior and exterior scenes in 3D Studio 7 using v-ray. But I think the choice in 3D application varies from one designer to another.
Good luck in finding one than you feel comfortable with.

Hi John, there will be no simple answer to this. You will probably have to try/demo several applications to see which one suites your needs. Mac or Windows? Which ever you like is the best answer. Both do just fine. No real difference these days, pretty much comes down to which OS your prefer. Some ones to look at..
SketchUp
Cinema 4D
Carrera
DesignWorkshop
Microspot has a program called "Interiors" that looks neat.
(mac only)
If you go mac I think a tag-team combo of SketchUp and Highdesign would make a good choice.

Doesn't matter if it is Mac or Windows to have a good graphics...it's in your VGA card, why not using a higher version of NVIDIA for your graphics. If you're planning to buy a new computer don't buy laptop for making a 3d insted use a desktop...XPS Gen or any XPS version from Dell could be great for making a 3D. Continue on what you are using for making a 3D for both interior and exterior. MicroStation J is the best but still having bugs rather than SE. Antialias and Radiosity command is the best for having a good ligthing effect when you rendering a night scene.

Having been in professional practice within Interior Design for some time now, I have never been more satisfied as I have with Vectorworks. Its an all singing all dancing reality, radiosity, rapid piece of software. I am also working towards my lighting design diploma in conjunction with RIBA and the LET (Lighting Education Trust) and I know what qualitites of lighting design and implementation one requires or looks for in an interior designers visualisation package.. So! get Vectorworks 12 (with Renderworks) and you won't be far from having the easiest, quickest and most realistic cad modelling package (ideal for fast paced design environment!!)

I am a designer too and use AutoCAD and 3D Studio max for my work..for realistic renders I either use Radiosity (which I'm not comfortable with yet) but I prefer Lightscape (discontinued now tho)

I'm doing arcitectural designs in greece, for interior puroses I always have be using 3d studio max, I tried other software, over time, but I think that 3d studio is just the best way to easy experiment and develop interiors.
its just a personal oppinion though, a frien of mine studies architecture in germay and uses vectorworks and both programs seem to have the same effectivenes and production rate.
the best way to select a few progz and try them out.. |
