its an engineering school in indiana........jk but thats the joke because its very technical and in a shitty part of chicago. Im from chicago but had to leave here to go to arch school because although chicago has the greatest architecture of any city...it doesnt have a good architecture school. Unfortuanetly many years ago the institue of design (founded by some of the most creative individuals of the 20th century including gropius) merged with that... eh ..institute. Anyways if you like mies, like the facist mies than you may like iit. For some reason it used to be good but than it fell off, and doesnt have a strong reputation an more. It just doesnt come up in conversations and dont even think they have a school...it just doesnt exist........go to university of illinois urbana, its a good arch and engineering school, unlike iit which is a bad arch good engineering school.

IIT has had a resurgence in recent years. The campus has had a face-lift with new buildings by Rem Koolhaas and Helmut Jahn. The same is true for the program, which has seen the influx of some interesting young design prof’s which are producing exciting and important work. I definitely think this is a program that is worth considering. The school has great architectural history coupled with very good resources—important aspects for an independent thinking and intellectually apt Masters Student.

well that was pretty biased....i admit its an ok school but it definitley stresses the technical aspects of architecture compared to anything else. So if thats what you're going for then its a good program. A couple of my dads friends teach there but advised me to go elswhere during my pursuit of an architecture school. I found that pretty odd and was suprised that they didnt think too highly of the program. Infact UIC almost has a better reputation then IIT, however illinois urbana is lightyears ahead of both institutions. Chicago is an amazing city and i hate having to leave it for school however even though chicago has great architecture it really doesnt have a great arch school.

You can be as critical as you want, I don't care. I was just wondering what you are up to because you seem to be in a similar situation as me. I went to U of Mich. I've worked in a 40 person firm for 2 years now and will be leaving for grad school in the fall. I would have loved to stick around Chicago but you know how it is.

Obviously the choice of an architecture grad school is an extremely important decision and there are many factors that affect this decision. B. Arch, M. Arch 1, 2, 3 are all very different degrees. When entering a B. Arch or an M. Arch 1 I think it’s reasonable to seek the guidance and suggestions of rankings, poles peers and even ‘your parents or parents friends’. I think that when you are engaging in an advanced degree, there are a lot more factors that come into play—specialties that certain schools possess, distinguished Prof’s/architects that could potentially support the interest of an incoming student, travel abroad programs etc.. At this stage you should have a better idea of what you want out of a program. Part of the problems with the some of the questions on this forum is that they are too general -- people aren’t explicit enough. This leads to overly generalized comments about the reputation of some schools and ultimately the proliferation of the reputation of the same old schools.
