I ask this question because I am currently in the process of taking a leave of absence for personal reasons and I hate the idea of leaving architecture school. It's killing me inside. I know I'll return but I guess the journey away from school is both scary and exhilirating. I just wanted to hear some stories from others who may have taken some of the same steps. Hope to hear from you soon.

I took a leave from school - against my own desire. I was not admitted to fifth year. I am thankful however to have had the interruption. Personally it has given me time to reflect on my schooling , to start a business and a family and to enjoy some down time. The Architecture Student's life is erratic and exhausting. Take advantage of a little bit of freedom and stop to smell the roses.

Thanks conqueror (like that?) for your thoughts. You know, I wonder why professors...it seems especially in technical fields...feel that they need to push their views on their students. How can they know. We had a professor who told one of our classmates that before the program was over she'd be divorced. What a bitter woman?!? I feel that they love to project their frustrations with their own lives onto others. I've never experienced such nonsense during my undergrad...(I have a different bachelor's). Very interesting.
Glad to hear that everything's worked out for you. How's business?

I think professors in various fields like to push their personal views on anyone who will listen. I think it is always beneficial to hear different views on a subject matter because it helps us to be more objective however some tend to go beyond the boundary of objective and are just down right offensive and narrow minded. Architecture schooling is strainuous on any relationship, fortunately my husband was willing to go the distance because it meant so much to me and we had a collective goal. We now have a residential design/build business that is going strong. It isn't necessary for me to return to school to get my fifth year in for business purposes however I feel like we sacrificed entirely too much to just end up with a 4 year preprofessional Degree. Within the next 3 years I will return to finish what I started.

I am just about to go back to college after a leave of absence. It was certainly a great opportunity to clear my head and re-focus on what I wanted to do. But I would definitely advise keeping up some level of creative work during the absence. I know full well I could have done a lot more, even without access to a university library and facilities!

Architectural education is very stressful and intense (often the office environment is too). I thought the atmosphere during the last part of my course was quite unpleasant and the 'teaching' technique sometimes bordered on bullying. I think some academics either have a 'chip on their shoulder' or are hiding inadequacies, so use macho aggresion to defend themselves from us bright students Wink

Good point lekizz....one should definitely pursue creative activities when on break or even after they finished their schooling. I should add that I personally believe it is important to read read read! Keep up on current events in architecture, art and new technologies. This will make you obviously more knowledgeable but also much more marketable to clients.
