Hello
I am in 3 rd yr B arch and would like to know from you people out there about your style of shopping. I am not inquisitive about ur design concepts but would like to get a feed back from you all on shopping and entertainment.
Presently we are making volumetric analysis of the built form, and then later would move on to the sketch desogn stage. However i wonder whether the designs that we would be architecture or mere functionalism. CAN ART BE INCORPORATED IN THIS DESIGN? Question
Another question which i would like to bother you with is that, CAN YOU SHOP ANYHWERE LIKE IN A FOREST OR IN A DESERT LIKE RAJASTHAN OR IN THE GRASSLANDS OF PRARIES? WHAT IS IT THAT DEMARCATES THE BOUNDARIES OF THE MOST ULTIMATE SHOPPING EXPERIENCE? Question

Well you are a 3rd year B-arch like myself so you understand that form follows function. You should also understand phanomolgy as well and you can shop anywhere that makes you feel like you want to shop. If your building is inviting it could go anywhere. If the building makes you feel comfortable when you walk in it then people will wnat to shop. I would hope art can be incorperated into the design. The function is shopping, you shop for beautiful things you want the building you are to be Beautiful spam well, therefor you can incorperate art inot the building.

The first thing you need to do is get some precedence on what you think works and doesn’t work for the exact idea or concept you are trying to portray. The program needs to be much more in-depth and understood than merely the form. Creating event and an real steady interaction between the person and the architecture is much more enjoyable than just form fallowing function.

I know of a good book by Rem Koolhaas. Its called "The Harvard School Guide to Shopping” Inscribed are numerous essays and data of how shopping is literally changing the world. It talks about many cities from Thailand to Germany to America. If you’re doing any work on this subject it’s a great idea to pick this book up.

Art should always be incorporated. And not just visual art such as pictures or models on billboards, but acoustical art or tactile art or even sensual art. I lived in Italy for about half a year and traveled all around Europe and it seems the architecture there that deals with shopping is this very way. In Milan, (most likely the one of the greatest shopping areas in the world) The Galleria Vittorio Emanuel really is a good example of a pedestrian shopping precinct; Check it out…

And despondently, shopping can be pretty much done anywhere due to the capabilities that we have with design. I live in Las Vegas, a veritable desert, where the temperature can reach 120 degrees Fahrenheit (47 degrees Celsius) and people shop here as much as they do in New York or L.A, maybe more, because of the programming that is instilled in the architecture. Of course it’s another argument about the environmental aspect, but that’s neither here nor there.

In a study done recently and shown in the New York Times, Las Vegas is now 50% Entertainment and shopping and 50% gamming. About 30 years ago or when the book "Learning from Las Vegas" came out those percentages were near 80-20. So, if you look at Las Vegas as a precedence in terms of programming you might have a good jumping off point to talk about where and when people shop.

Diversity is the real answer to your problem. Really mix the different types of uses that you’re trying to motivate. That is essentially the great thing about shopping. If you provide an enormous amount of "things" for people to see and do than the experience is going too more enjoyable. Not to mention the social interaction between people. THATS A BIG THING.
