None of the above cities qualify as a planned city. All of them are small patches of built area sown together to form a city. The mere fact that at one point in time there has been a city planning commission pressing its mark (which should still leave London out of this poll)doesn't make it a planned city. A planned city is designed from scratch and built according to guidelines in that design.

Why aren't more obvious examples included in this poll e.g. cities like Brasilia Chandigarh, Washington DC, St Petersburg?

i think when it comes to cities no one can say that its a planned city or its not every city has some flaus in its planning some are major and some are minor so every body has different ideas on it i think no city in the world is planned and neither can be planned in future as well only reason is that life changes every day no one can change that and niether it can be controlled so topic is just useless to be voted on

Beleive it or not, some cities are planned from scratch. (e.g. Brasilia, Brazil; Canberra, Austrailia; Washington D.C., USA)

Many cities are growing so fast that large portions of them have been planned in modern times. Especially in California, USA, where I live, there are thousands of planners employed to help cities to grow healthily and control suburban sprawl.

I agree that the poll is essentially invalid in that no city is wholly "planned". I voted New York for the simple fact that Manhattan's grid layout combined with the success of Central Park as a "pre-planned" space (which both sharply contrasts and accentuates the surronding urban environment) most closely approximates a premeditated system of urban planning.

People who say that "no city is planned from the start" are ill informed. Read my post above and do research on these things before you make ignorant comments.

hi friends,
i would like to know why everyone are making such a mess with the the question that i've
put in this discussion.i expected much more reasonable answers on scientific basis.i acccept my mistake in selecting the cities under the best planned city -poll.but atleast you could have given me a clear idea of what a planned city, the advantage of it over the others ,the advantages its inmates or visitors can have in being in such a city...etc.

No one could plan the human life then no one can plan a city.A city, is the procession of human's lives.

I have never heard such idiots before in my life.
There are hundred of books written on this subject, and plenty of information about planning.

For all of you idiots (if you dont understand this word try moron or dumbass).
go to this link and read up on Brasilia, Brazil. A city that was designed from SCRATCH:
http://www.geocities.com/TheTropics/3416/

Then go visit Washington D.C. USA. Another city that was planned from SCRATCH.

OK, asad, we are clearly on different pages here. I'm not sure what point you are making because you are speaking incoherently. Is this because English is not your first language, or is it because you are an idiot and choose not to speak properly? If it is the former, I give you credit for trying.

The point I have been trying to make by my posts above is that there are cities in the world that have been planned entirely from scratch. The cities are there testifying for themselves... there is no need to read about it in books because these cities are real.

Im not sure what you mean when you say "bookworms" dont have any future.... I am a bookworm, I read all the time. I am a well-rounded individual and like to think I can recognize propaganda when I hear it. I do not beleive everything I read; only those who look down on "bookworms" actually believe everything they read. And I have a very bright future, in fact. I am married to a beautiful and intelligent woman, am extremely happy, and am very successful in college and my secular career.

So, sir, if you have something intelligble to add, please respond with something worth my time, and not just reply with rediculously vague comments like the above.

- David

The question is inherently amiss…What do you mean “the best planned city”…etc. Transportation? Social interaction? Books have been written on that very question. And the argument could go on forever. Some cities in 3rd world countries could be considered better planned cities that Brasilia or New York.

Kenny P Joy, define the question for us!
