Hi, I've been experimenting with DW lite and am having a problem. When I I attempt to edit an object's properties I get strange results. I'm trying to extrude a rectangle into a wall. Sometimes this works fine. In other cases, when I adjust the vertical measurement it instead adjusts the "Z" coordinate so that instead of getting a 10 foot high wall, I get a line 10 feet above the 0 Z. When I go back to the object properties, the Z value has been automatically changed to the value I put in the Vetical property, and the vertical property gets changed to 0. Whacky.

Has never happened to me. I have definately put the 10 on the wrong line and got the same results you mentioned.

... trying to extrude a rectangle into a wall.

Are you using Windows or Mac OS?

I'm in Mac OS X. DW runs in classic on my machine. You can enter an adjustment by "tabbing" out of the input window you want to adjust in the Object Info box or by hitting the "enter" key. Try it both ways.

You have to be specific with DW. If you are in Object Info, Size, Vert and enter 10. You may want to try entering 10' or 10.0'. The feet indicator may be needed to make it clear to DW what you want to do especially if you have changed the Layout/Preferences/Dimensions settings.

Also save often and save versions of your project. Sometimes DW gets a little wierd after a couple of hours of editing an object. Restarting the program helps fix that.

Thanks for replying. Running WinXP.

Yea, I have been entering 10' and trying 10.0' but still get the problem. It's strange, sometimes hitting the enter key effects the change, the tab normally does. I agree about restarting; I've found that sometimes helps, but in the end, I am still having the problem. It seems there are certain objects I am consistently able to change and others I can't change. All started out as lines or rectangles. It's still a pretty simple drawing of about 40 objects.

Dear Jim,

If you are trying to extrude the objects using the crosshairs the behavior you describe is consistent with trying to extrude without first space-jumping to the handle. Just because the crosshair looks to be in the same point in space as the handle does not mean it is.

Also if the object is a block with no thickness, rather than a polyline you will not be able to give it a vertical dimension by alt-dragging a corner handle. With zero-thickness blocks you need to enter a dimension in the Vert field of the Object Info window to give them a vertical dimension.

But it sounds like you are entering the dimension in the Object Info field when seeing this behavior. I'm not sure what would cause this, and have never seen it myself.

If any point of the polyline you are editing is at a different Z than the other points the object will stretch the points apart, rather than extruding the object. But even then at least one point would be at 0 and at least one would be at 10. This doesn't sound like what you are seeing either.

You need to hit either enter or tab to make the changes in an Object Info field take effect. Hitting the tab key will apply the change and select the next field in the Object Info.

If your units are set to either feet or feet and inches DesignWorkshop assumes you are entering dimensions in feet, so you do not need to include the ' symbol, but it doesn't cause any problem to include it.

As long as we are discussing the details of the Object Info window I should mention you can also do simple arithmetic in the fields. If you want to move an object 7.25 feet to the south simply insert "+7.25" after the number in the Y field. If you want an object to be half its current height simply enter "/2" after the number in the Vert field.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure any of this addresses your issue. If you continue to experience this please send a model to support@artifice.com which singles out an object that exhibits this behavior.

Best wishes,

Mike Wheeler
