I had asked if there was a reason not to upgrade to system 10-2-8 and got sugestions to ga ahead and upgrade. Don't do it if you are using a HP Designjet 500PS printer. the rip software that used to work for us in the classic mode will not work in a version later that 10.2.4. I upgraded only to find that the printer will no longer work, After a call to HP had to reinstall system software back to 10.2.3 that came with themachine and now we (me and HP tech) cannot get the printer back on line to be available for printing. So now I can't print at all from my G4 to the HP500 PS.

Left it with HP support that I have to print back tru a network to my old machine. Very slow and what if that machine goes down.

Any possible help would be welcome.

Have you tried the free Gimp-print driver, and the HP500 driver at buymelunch.com?

Check out the Bullpen for info and links to download the driver. As far as the 500 driver at buymelunch - scroll down.

If you have panther, I believe the latest gimpprint is installed with it - correct me if I'm wrong about that everyone - in which case you will just need the HP500 driver at buymelunch linked above.

Then after you get the plotter working you can call the guy at HP and tell him thanks for nuthin![/url]

Greg.
I tried to down load at gimp print numberous times to no avail. I was never able to get a printer installed properly in the print center, even after reading many posts on it and folloing all the various instructions. I purchased the driver from Print Pro and it installed OK but totally messed with my colors and fills. So I am stuck with HP. I did get the printer to finally work again using classic and saving files as PS files etc. I was told by the Girl at HP Tech, ( she was very on the ball) that the old RIP engine will now work using Panther. So long as you launch the rip engine before selecting the print option from the file menu. This sounds like an almost native situation.

Not sure if I want to go up to Panther.

any Feed Back on ungrading to Panter, How it effects PC 6.0.4

Thanks.

PS it would be great to not have to mess with HP support.

If you download the "buymelunch" driver mentioned above, the 500PS works flawlessly in Panther without additional software. Panther has GIMP built in. My 500PS works better now than it ever did in OS9. As long as the driver is loaded and the printer added, there is nothing else to do.

I too am using the gimp print driver with a 500ps and 10.3.4, now I can print directly from print center, and cut between multiple copies which I could not do with the old rip.

Tried to download the gimp drivers and when I open the advanced menu, I don't see the 500PS printer. Any ideas?

Tried control clicking and all I get is 'download link to disk', which gives me the link only, not the file. Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated. I also tried to download from a PC in addition to the MAC.

Thanks,
John

Are you sure you are trying to download the right driver. Go to: http://buymelunch.org/printing/
This is the one you want.

Maybe I am not downloading the image correctly. When I click on the download icon, I get a screen full of code!

Thank you all for your responses. Got it going and printing like crazy. With PowerCadd 6, the printer is flying. Drawings cue up, cut, and keep printing.

Thanks again.
