It appears that DW 1.8 is unable to apply a material / texture to an individual face. I am wondering what the best method is then to build a complete interior / exterior model of a house.
I started with the massing model, and then planned to use the Wallify command. However, I can't apply interior and exterior materials to a given wall face, only to the entire wall (in and out).
Using the Trim tool to split each wall, seems ridiculously complicated.
For those of you using DW, do you design with polylines and extrude? Do you create an interior and an exterior wall? Or do you use Wallify and the trim tool? Or is there a better method? |

Unfortunately you are right that DW cannot apply textures to individual faces. I really wish Artifice would get on the ball and update DW, I love the interface, but the functions just don't compare to other software. I recently discovered a program called 3D Canvas that puts DW to shame, and the pro version costs less than DW Classic!
Your problem is circumvented as you suggest by wallifying (to get mitered corners) and them trimming lengthwise down the wall and applying a material to both parts. As for me, I don't mind this so much in light of DW's wonderful Alt-drag, space-jump, and projection line features, not to mention all those very useful features in the Arrange menu.
It's a little more complicated to split a tilted wall created from wallifying a non-orthagonal box: The problem is that the top of the wall is not perpendicular to the inner/outer faces of the wall, resulting in a misaligned trim . So you must first trim of the top of the wall to make it perpicdicular to the face of the wall (holding the shift key while trimming to get a straight trim) THEN trim the top down the middle (again while holding the shift key). |

DISREGARD MY POST ABOVE! I thought of a much simpler way:
Rather than trimming down the center of the wall, which requires much care, just wallify the wall itself! Select the wall and click on wallify, but enter a small value, like 1 inch. Now you have two objects for your inner and outer walls. AND this works well for vertical or slanted walls. You get 2 extra pieces at the short ends of the wall, but those are easily deleted if they bother you.
Why didn't I think of it before... |
