I'm working on a design for a client who has a most problematic living room and hope someone can give me some suggestions, as I was awake at 4:50 this morning struggling with this room. The home is a small (1500sqft), non-distinct, rance-style home (I'll try to attach plan).
Living room is long and narrow - 14'6" x 24'6", and has the fireplace jammed in the corner of the long wall, adjacent to the short wall. Traffic flow is lengthwise through this room, which further challenges arrangement around the FP. Previous owners have vaneered the FP brick face with a slab of limestone floor to ceiling. My thought is to remove upper half of stone (and brick if that's possible) and sheetrock above, and have a mantle installed over opening. Any suggestions as to what to balance corner with? Client would like a plasma TV. Perhaps 2 sitting areas? One cozy in front of awkward FP, and one TV-viewing area at other end of room? This room is their family-living room and they have 2 small children.
Please inspire!

Hi,
In reference to the fireplace in the corner. are they going to ise it as a wood burning fireplace or are they going with gas logs? if you could talk them into ventless gas logs you could block the fireplace off and frame up a corner fireplace and install ventless gas logs. you may need to take off some of the stone so you could plaster back or drywall the area that may be exposed to the room. hope this helps. if not email me and we could come up with another solution.
