Hi Everyone
I am totally new to the world of 3D. I would like to learn a couple of 3D programs but I'm not sure where to start. I would like to be albe to use 2D Autocad files and turn them into 3D. I work in landscape architecture and my aim is to be able to create 3D landscape visulisations to scale. I don't use Autocad at all at present.
What program do you think I should learn? Does 3D Studio Max read Autocad files? I believe there is a Autocad 3D. Is this made by Autodesk? How hard is it to learn next to Studio Max?
As you can see I have lots of questions. I have tried to find info on the web but as you know it is getting harder and harder to anything when there is sooooo much info and rubbish out there .
Kind Regards

Well not a real easy answer to this but here goes...
Yes, 3D Studio Max is a good program but IT IS COMPLEX. Same answer applies to XSi, Maya, Form-Z and Lightwave. All of these are high end 3D application. My advice is to look at SketchUp 3D (www.sketchup.com). It is the easiest 3D program to learn and it can give great results. It also works well with 2D AutoCAD files. It is also not too expensive - $500 USD. I use it a bit and while Sketchup does not have a built in rendering engine you can export out to other engines. I use Vue and Bryce as rendering engines. Here is a small picture I did from a 2D autoCAD file into Sketchup and then rendered with an older version of Vue.
This took all of 15 mintues to make and about 5 mintues to make the render.

Another question.
Can files generated in a GIS eg Arcview be imported into 3D Max and turned into 3d terrain using the topographical information in the file? Which file formats from a GIS can be used?
Does anyone know of tutorials on this?
Cheers

I have not tried but I don't think so. I use Bryce and Vue as more of rendering engines not for model generation. I use AutoCAD and SketchUp for that. Sorry |
