A bad idea, if it appeals pursuasively to a basic emotion, can be sold despite its illogicality, its cruelty, even its inhumanity.
The sellers themselves must either have become convinced of the worth of the idea, or they must have an ulterior motive in their mission.
Anyone who hasn't become swept up, for any reason, in the hysteria over the "right to life," or "freedom from religious pesecution," can see the parallels between the Religious Right's campaign for an American theocracy, and the Third Reich's campaign for a gentile Germany. The same sorts of crooked logic, bogus history, and clever maneuvering are at work here, now.
