I am not sure how much detail to give of a automatic rolling gate for a carport area under a building I am doing. I have given the basic design of what I want the 36" high gate to look like, but have not addressed the

track on the ground
the rollers/wheels
the openning equipment
sizes of matl.

one problem is I am not a gate designer so I have no idea what the heck I am doing. Thanks for the help

The specifics of the gate can be handled in the Specifications Document for the project, you'll need to select the type of equipment that you are using. IF it is a custom gate, then the design of the gate along with the technical aspect you mentioned, and are to be shown in your drawings. I suspect you can select a premanufactured gate to use, call out the height and width and operation on your drawings and show some semblance of anchoring it to the building or structure that is holding it up and let the specifications for the selected gate company be shown in your Specifications Document....most likely under specialities....division 10....include all the technical aspects of the equipment you selelct.

wow, i'd love to design a gate. i'd love to design a door knob.
each has its own needs and specifics.. but, why can't YOU design a gate?
you don't need to be a gate designer.
Is it really a gate? Maybe its a wall that's made of "gate" material or vice-versa. What do you want it to look like? You have the power to create... take advantage. Gates will "only" be gates until you make more of them.
Inspire yourself.

wstuart,
If your design allows it, you might consider a swing gate or two swing gates for simplicity. Swing gate operators are very simple and there is a model to handle any size gate you can come up with, plus you wont have to use a tracking system. If room will not allow and you still don’t want to use tracks you can make it cantilever. You’ll need about 1/3rd the gates length added to the actual gate size for a backstop and counter weight to remain on the posts while the gate is closed. With a rolling gate it’s common to use an inverted angle iron (laying on the ground with the point of the “V” sticking up) that the guide wheel (a cast aluminum wheel w/ the female shape of the “V” ) rolls along for guidance. These parts are readily available from most any fence supply yard. Check your local jurisdiction for codes relating to “safety edges”, which are a good practice anyway. A safety edge will stop and return the gate to open if it hits an obstruction. Some larger automatic gate operators have killed people that were caught between it and the latching post. There are ways to adjust the clutch so this will not happen but why take the chance.
