    |
|
I'll be building a home soon, and this was my first hack at the design - the lot is situated on a high hill, on the edge of an escarpment - they view is unbelievable - I want to do everything I can to maximize the vew-
The bottom floor would contain a living area w/fireplace, a small kitchen/bar, dining area, bathroom and utility room. For added security, only glass block is used for the 1st floor glass.
The second floor would be 2 bedroom 2 bath. There will be several good sized slider windows on this floor. (not shown)
The top floor, mostly glass and steel, would be a master suite and office....

a rough guess of what it will cost to build in concrete
(building roughly 5400 square feet total - the cylinder will be 44 feet in diameter, 3 stories)
I just want a high guess $$$. 2 million?
Is it asthetically pleasing? or ugly as a water tower?
Aside from the obvious concern over the flat "roof", any other design concerns or flaws?
I want something that deflects the Texas sun, is rugged, impervious to insects, secure, cost efficient, and most of all I want to maximize the view.
How'd I do?

"Is it asthetically pleasing? or ugly as a water tower?"
- the latter (but you knew that already).
if you are intending to spend $2m then find an architect who is enthusiatsic for the project and whose work you like.
there are many examples of towers of different shapes and sizes which could fit well into a hill-top site, but the integration of a tower into a house is tricky. The money will be well spent on the architect and could prove cost-effective both in helping you to get a practical/buildable design, to have a house that is enjoyable to live in - and with good re-sale value.

Lets see, the "glass block only" used on the ground floor will minimize any clear views you are trying to maximize....and the living portion of the house on the ground floor will be used the maximum amount of the time, so therefore you might have it upside down...as you have minimized your views from the most used rooms...unless of course you plan on living in your master suite work environment at the top of the tower?
The tower concept is good...the zones of use need to be thought of as to the stacking logic of a 3 story house....if you can enter on level 2, that would be your living space level...and beds would be below and above it.
So, 5500 sf = $175 / SF or $962,500.......guessing by complexity of shape, terrain, availability of materials, and size....but the "unbelievable view"? ............ priceless.

Thanks for the feedback! I guess windows on the first floor make sense... as long as they are secure... bullet proof... non -openers... hmmm... athough the ground floor "merely" has a view of trees. The 2nd and 3rd floors will have MUCH better views.
I think you're right on with your guestimate, maybe a little low.

I can appreciate the concept but currently -- it's a bit water-towerish. Concrete is a solid idea though (no pun intended!)
And -- sounds like you definitely need to find someone you can work with who will appreciate your vision -- it's a great one.
Good luck!

You might want to do a littel research on lighthouses. Many of them were cylindrical and included living quarters in a rectangular house at the base of the lighthouse. Lighthouses may give you some additional ideas about the layout and design of you Tower House.
Here is a link to a such a lighthouse.

darn it a hillside is my dream location to design a house . Anyways youve probably got architects who'd kill to design a house for a budget of 2m so hire one. You can give them the basic idea and they will refine the plan for you. Good advice .

if its going to be a water tower, then i can accept it as a water tower.
how about maybe exploring the actual water tower and exploiting or exploding its parts, materials... etc.
manipulate the idea. it's a great thought, but there you've basically placed your simplest idea out without any kind of development to it.
i think that its great that you've thought about the materiality of it. but, maybe the fact that it will be constructed from concrete gives it its own form... what would a water tower look like built in concrete? would its form change?
i just think that the idea needs so much more thought and sensitivity to it.
