Has anyone gotten an Epson 4000? I have an Epson 3000 that is getting very long in the tooth. Bought in '98 I think. It has lasted well but now has problems. I like the features of the 4000 like a paper tray that holds up to 250 sheets of A2 my paper size of choice. Included is an Auto Paper cutter for roll stock on this one vs the 3000. I down loaded a user guide from Epson along with a brochure in PDF form. Looks very good! More expensive than the HP 120 but for my situation the extra size of the 120 is a cost as I have no convenient location for it. It is massive... 41" wide. The 4000 has about the same footprint as the 3000 so it will fit in just fine.

Any thoughts Question

The brochure can be found at: http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/WideFormat/WideFormatDetail.jsp?cookies=no&oid=-11261[/url][/b]

I was looking at that very printer last night. It is comparable in cost to the network ready HP120 where the Epson 4000 does not include internet connectivity. If you don't need it on the network it should not matter, and if you are connecting it direct to your computer then the Epson has a firewire port which should perform better than the USB port on the HP. I would guess that the Epson with its 7 color ink cartridges is going to print better than the HP with 6 colors, but I doubt it would make any difference with the CAD files you will likely be printing. Having owned printers from both companies I'd say Epson's support has been first class, and HP's has been spotty at best. If you don't need the larger sheet then I'd say it comes down to preference, and I would prefer the Epson as well.

The Epson 4000 was demoed at Macworld in January (saw it there) and it was very impressive. However, there are currently no reviews available except promo pieces, and it does not appear available yet, despite assurances it is. A great site to explore is www.fineartgicleeprinters.org. It's a University testing service of fine art and CAD printers, scanners, etc. I'm also very interested in upgrading printers and have two suggestions. One, be patient and wait until test results are in, and Two, check out HP's new 130. And yes it's big, but now has longevity inks and much more. When and if anyone has experience with the 4000 or the HP 130 . . . please let us know.

Paul, this site has a review on the 4000 you may be interested in.

the new designjet 30 says it does 19" and it costs a fraction of the Epson 4000. It may be worth looking into. Do you really need to have Epson's color performance for the things you are printing?

The DesignJet 30 has a maximum length of 19" not width. The Epson 4000 prints the same media as the 3000 which I already have. I use A2 paper which is metric but gives me 16.5 X 23.4. The 3000 in it's early days was the only machine that could feed from a tray at that size. In other words it was a little plotter that was desktop like a printer. The 4000 is the same with better paper handling and an auto cut feature for roll stock to boot.

Don't need the color performance for sure but the speed on draft quality color will be very nice.[/b]
