David -- It's highly likely that this phpbbs uses cookies on your computer to manage the appearance and behavior of the links it is displaying. the process you described sounds to me like it would certainly break the system... why don't you try logging in from OSX and looking at the forum as you might expect to on a typical day, and see if the behavior isn't slightly more predictable.

Yes, messages-read are stored in cookies, on a user-specific basis. And until you log in, the system only knows you generically as "guest". As a (free) membership-based system, it doesn't try to guess who you are.

Thus, it might appear that the "chicklet icons don't work". But from the system's perspective, they are working fine -- it is just that from a system perspective, "you" didn't read the messages - Guest did.

This behavior is different from the old DesignCommunity.com forums (which simply stored a time stamp of the last viewing of the "new messages" list, on a machine-specific rather than a user-specific basis).

Is it possible the icons were a different color because they were indicating a diferent status -- i.e. unread vs. read?

If you are logged in it will work.

The record of which posts you have or have not read is actually stored in a database on our server. Who you are is stored as a cookie on your computer. If this cookie is not working (because you didn't check the box to automatically log in, or you are using a different browser, different software, or the cookie is just not being read properly) then you will not be logged in and you will not see which posts are new. As soon as you do login you will see which posts are new and which are old.

You can quickly tell if you are logged in or not by the top right tab, if it says Login, you are not logged in. If it says Logout, you are logged in.

Mike
