Dear Designers, Builders, and Friends,
ArchWeek Green, from the editors of the leading architecture magazine online, brings you weekly sustainable design and building news from around our planet.
Reversing sprawl is a conceptually challenging but large and essential aspect of rebuilding our communities for low carbon footprints.
What's amazing is just how feasbile and fruitful the process can be. An ArchitectureWeek article this week looks at some real sprawl-reversing projects...
| Quote: | What of the middle scale -- the ten- to 40-acre (four- to 16-hectare) shopping centers with two or more anchors? What kind of impacts and communities can retrofits build at this scale?
Based on his extensive experience, noted urban designer Andres Duany believes that it is difficult to 'establish' a sense of place or urban synergy on less than 15 acres (six hectares). However, what smaller shopping center retrofits in relatively urban areas can do very well is 'restore' urbanism.
Uptown District in San Diego and Kirkwood Station Plaza in Kirkwood, Missouri, both restored street connectivity that had been removed by their prior occupants, a giant Sears store and Target, respectively. |

Who is credited with the following three quotes?
"Architecture is the will of the age conceived in
spatial terms."
"A chair is a very difficult object. A skyscraper is
almost easier. That is why Chippendale is famous."
"For the meaning and right of every age, including our
own, consists solely in providing the spirit with the
necessary prerequisites for its existence."
