my mac: OS X v10.4.11. Intel Core 2 Duo
PowerCad 7.0.3

I have been having various problems with PowerCadd I wonder if there is anyone who can help me out. I had previously been using Vectorworks, before my office decided to switch me to PowerCad 7, since then I have experience a series of problems with the drawings.

I am now suspecting the files are corrupted, possibly from translating everything from Vectorworks to dwg or dxf, then open in PowerCad. I have listed what I have experienced (chronologically), for those who can help.

I am looking for people who had previously translated files from Vectorworks to PowerCad and if they experienced similar problem. Ultimately, I would like to know what I can do to fix my problem.

I am not sure what more I can do, can someone advise me? I have tried:
- Report to the person we purchased PowerCad. I have sent him screen shots, log file, the drawing I experience problems with and he has came to the office in Feb.
- Reinitialized my MAC 10.4.11. I have done so twice.
- Reinstall my original PowerCadd 7
- Installed a new PowerCadd 7: 7.0.3 (Build FH17)-W
- Installed PowerCadd 6: 6.2.0(Build DL17)-W and worked on it for a week to establish whether it was PC 7 that caused me problems

A
SHORT HISTORY OF THE PROBLEMS SO FAR
The following problems occurred on PC 7 (my files were translated from Vectorworks) :
1) I cannot edit hatching (line thickness or colour)
2) Space bar which I usually use as a Pan tool, does not behave as it should be - cannot pan a drawing. (when this happened, the space bar sometimes became the short key to Toggle Through Layers; sometimes it simply doesn’t work). Once this happens, the space bar also becomes useless for typing in text boxes.
- I avoided this problem by setting short cut for Pan with another key.
3)When I do Move (by Mouse) I cannot press Tab to go to Invoke Edit Window (I simply can’t use the edit window for this function, even by clicking the window with mouse) or press ESC to cancel - if I do the object I want to move disappears off the screen.
- I avoided this by using nudge and other moving methods

Problems (1) and (2) happened from time to time ever since Nov/Dec 07, and I can sort it out if I restart PowerCadd 7, while 3) is a constant problem (ie it had never worked for me). In Feb 08, things got worse as the Attribute window start to have problem. There was no incident to prompt the new problems to occur.

New problems occurred on top of problems 1) 2) and 3) are:
4) the attribute box looses function, eg. indicates a line as 0.01 point when the line is obviously not.
5) Functions under the Tool menu suddenly become unresponsive - ie I can’t select them (this only happened once on 27.02.0Cool

On 27.02.08, the computer technician who we purchased PowerCadd from came to the office and I demonstrated the problems. He performed a series of updates on my computer. In Library/Preferences and on PowerCad website.

Problems 1), 2), 4) and 5) never happened again after that. However, more problems arise - these are constant problems and does not get sorted if I restart PowerCadd.

Such as:
6) I cannot change dash lines by going to the Attribute window or the pull down menu (Attr) at the top of the window
7) Instead of a small list of dash lines, I now see a infinite list of dash lines. But I cannot choose any of them.
Cool If I try to edit/delete dash lines from Attr the program will crash
-I avoid problems 6) and 7) by using the Sample tool to get dash lines from existing lines that as dashed

By 25.03.08 new problems occurred. (there were no reason to prompt the new problems to occur)
9) I cannot undo
10) I cannot paste in group. I can do a Paste Special but cant Paste.

I spoke to the person we purchased PowerCad system, and he sent me a new copy of PowerCadd 7, incase mine was corrupt. I installed it.Problem 3), 6) and 7) still persists constantly.

I reinitialised the hard disk, and installed the new PowerCad 7, but the problem for dash line was still there.

THE CURRENT SITUATION ON PC7

- I still have problem 3) not being able to type in the value of move. However, if I do ESC half way through Move (by mouse) I can see by object appear at (0,0) rather than disappearing.

- Often there appears no problem hen a file is first opened, but problems 6) and 7) will appear again, even though there appears to have no problem with dashline window when the files were first open.

- I have tried installing PowerCadd 7 in another computer in the office and there is the same problem (which made me suspicious that it my be the files that are causing the problem)

INSTALL POWERCAD 6

The technician sent me a copy of PowerCad 6 (6.2.0), I was the only person in the office using PowerCad 7 as we were thinking about upgrading from v6 to v7.

I installed v6 on my computer and saved my v7 drawings to v6, to establish whether it is a fault with PC7. However, there were new problems now.

11) I can’t create new Text Styles, I will select a text box with Helvetica CY 10 (or anything)and click Add Style, but the style created will be Geneva 12 (and the style is Geneva 12)

-I have tried this on different fonts and some works but most cannot create text style. The ones worked are Capital, InaiMathi, Arial (Reg, Narrow, Black) etc. It seems to work for Helvetica after I run the Font Check, but still not worked on Helvetica CY - which, unfortunately is the one I want
12) I can’t set the default font of the text box to be Helvetica CY, it changes to Geneva automatically. Prior to running Font Check I can’t set it to anything at all
13) Eye drop tool does not work for text. After running Font check I can do the eye drop for most text now But still not for Helvetica CY
14) The default window does not show me the size of the Helvetica CY font I select. It now works for other fonts after running Font Check.

-I have test 11) to 14) on new documents. Not just on my existing drawing.

Before we go anywhere with this you should upgrade to the latest versions:

7.0.6 and 6.2.1.

This may or may not solve all of your problems however it will at least give us a starting point so we don't go over old territory.

Derek

Derek,
thanks for reply, I will do an update, although I doubt it will help. I would have had the most up to date PC7 when I first reformatted my mac.

Will let you know how it goes.

Hi Derek,

I have tried updating PC7, and immediately there is a problem. I cannot PAN. I tried setting the short cut to another key but that doesn't work either. I can use the Overview window to move around my drawing though!

Also, I notice I cannot update to PC 7.0.6, at the moment it is at 7.0.3. I tired updating around 10 times now and have restarted my computer 3 times. I have tried going to Help/Update from prowercad program and did it by going to Application Folder and update by double clicking the ES Update Intl file in PowerCadd Intl. No matter how many times I tried it brings up the Update In Progress window, but it is still PowerCadd 7.0.3 (Build FH17)-W

Just thought I might point out anything strange:
Every time I open PowerCadd 7 now, TWO window comes up to tell me Wildtool 8 is available - not one, but two. And I have to click on cancel to both of them.

Help.

There are a lot of factors that could be coming into play

- obviously having the current software
- international system settings
- system maintenance
- corrupted or damaged preference files or key command files
- making sure to perform a cleanup drawing on the translated content

those are just a few things that can affect a lot of what you're describing

The best place to start for such a broad range if issues as you're describing is to contact engineered software by phone or email if you're in the United States or your international distributor if you're elsewhere. It's not that this forum isn't a place to try -- but getting on the phone with somebody when the issues are this diverse and complex is just a faster way to get the issues sorted out.

I hope that helps

I've done those types of translations -- your problem is not normal.

Try running Cleanup Drawing against the translated drawings is the first place to always start when translating any sort of file through DWG or DXF.

I hope that helps

Hi Brain,

I have contacted the distributer, who we purchased PowerCadd, he finds the same problems when I send him the files I have problems with. He says he is unable to identify the problem and have forwarded to the US team.

In the meantime I am finding very difficult to work. Who knows how long it will take for them to get back to me. The weird thing is sometimes when the files are opened, I am able to change line settings, paste in groups etc, but a while later it stops functioning.

Also I'm still experiencing problem updating to 7.0.6 - as per my previous post on Thu Apr 03, 2008 6:36 am.
