Well, I admit to liking the one published by the sponsor of these forums:
http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/

(of which I'm the head editor).

Smile

It's all online, every issue for the last seven and a half years, all 360+ issues live and searchable, with all the words and generous thumbnails for all the images free online. For gifts and serious readers, an affordable subscription allows viewing of the high resolution images and super-high resolution drawings.

As a quick-moving weekly, publishing 47 issues a year, ArchitectureWeek frequently covers major buildings months ahead of the the paper monthlies. At the same time, because we are dedicated to quality (and don't face per-page costs of paper and shipping) we often cover stories in more depth, with more extensive text and more photos and drawings as well.

ArchitectureWeek - News - Design - Building - Environment - Tools - Culture - Library

For a paper-based magazine, if that's what you really need for now, my general favorite is Architectural Review, out of London. The writing and design coverage is so far superior to the U.S. hardcopy monthlies like the old standby Architectural Record and the silly new Architect one (from the folks who bought and closed down Architecture).

There are many other great more specialized, more regional professional building design magazines out of Europe - Germany and Italy, etc.

In closing, let me quote some readers about ArchitectureWeek...

"This is the best place to get all types of information focused on the business of architecture. It is accurate and concise." - JB, Irvine, CA

"This is the best coverage I've seen!" - AJ, Salt Lake City, UT

"The best I've read in a while, not too glossy but still very clear." - CW, Montego Bay, Jamaica

"I am in need of articles on green buildings, so I thought, ArchitectureWeek is best!" - GP, Chennai, India

"Impressive. Informative. Enjoyable. Inspiring. Easy to access." - LB, Beverly Hills, MI

"I like to see private houses, specially in modern, functional, style. And modern milieu in general. Of course interfoliated by anything different from time to time, like the mosque the other day. So, much like you already do!" - MB, Gammelstad, Sweden

"ArchitectureWeek is my most favorite web site in the world." - SK, Seoul, South Korea

I would have to contest this comment, for a couple reasons. First, I dont see many carpenters putting together glass curtain wall systems over steel reinforced concrete plate structural members. I think most carpenters probably refer to a lower level of "Detail" when referencing how to assemble a stick frame home.

Secondly, I feel this magazine puts in perspective for the student or architect, the art of technology, in terms of making a building. There is so much discrepancy during design phase, especially in academia where the aspirations of large form big budget dreams over shadow the truth behind a building, and moreso, how they stand up. Detail magazine gives a great insight into the hows and whys of some really good projects, rather than catering to and illustrating only the brand name star-chitects.

Im glad the poster had Detail on their list, however, I just wanted to clear up this gross misconception so that the original poster may find the value inherent in this periodical.

Bottom line if you want to know how some really talented architects put their projects together, Detail is the way to go. It really has very little to do with carpentry as a trade. For this I suggest a Time_Life series on assembly of wood frame construction.

I do agree, El Croquis is a good magazine for some good international exposure. Dwell is also suitable for some good reading and keeping up on whats happening in the residential / more contemporary side of things.

I want to suggest the following as well

arq.a - mainly projects from Portugal and Spain
Blueprint magazine

also go on the internet, there are some great blogs and sites that are much more current on a daily basis, and much more progressive thinking than many of the big name print magazines, which tend to focus on the high buck projects getting lots of exposure. There is a lot that slips through the cracks as well, especially when it comes to sustainable design and pre-fab types of works.
