Reported in the Chicago Sun Times:

"Suburban sprawl, it appears, is bad for your health.
"A new study by the RAND Corp. think tank found that people in high-sprawl regions have more health problems such as diabetes, breathing difficulties, migraine headaches and high blood pressure.
"The study found that living in a high-sprawl area has the equivalent effect on your health as aging four years. Researchers don't know why this is so, but they cited an earlier study that found people who live in high-sprawl areas walk less, weigh more and have a higher rate of high blood pressure.
"Researchers also suggested that increased traffic in high-sprawl areas harms residents' health by causing more air pollution and traffic accidents.
"To improve our health, the study suggests that we should build cities where people feel comfortable walking and are not so dependent on cars," said study co-author Deborah Cohen."

well...having had the opertunity to live in Melbourne Australia....a beautiful city with great park systems, a train and tram system that works, most of the "burbs" are with in walking distance of "milk bars" and other shopping and anything else you could need. THere are bike routs everywhere as well! no real sprawl to speak of, at least in Brighton where I was.....and Atlanta, Georgia..the most useless, POS city ever devised by humans. You can't do anything there with out planting your ass in mindless traffic. I hate that city. Gwinnett county is a developers dream and environmentalists nightmare. Nothing is connected there. MARTA goes to the airport at that is it. You can not even go to a ball game with out having to take the train to a bus stop and taking the bus in...useless.
so...Melbourne makes it easy to walk, bike etc...Atlanta makes it easy to obtain a fat ass. Even if you believe that the global warming thing is a bunch of bs, it is difficult to admit that sucking fumes from the sport ute or honda in front of you is good for your health...fewer cars, less sucking of the fumes...better lungs.
If you have the opertunity to move to Atlanta...don't. It is cheap living there...but there is a reason for that. Boston, Chicago, San Fran... etc are much better, culturaly (Atlanta having turned its culture into parking lots and sports) and for your health. |
