Arkians Architects have been succesfully providing outsourced services to American and European Architectural firms. Below are excerpts of an interview between our Managing Director and Mr. Phillip J Hatch of Ventoro Outsourcing consultants (www.ventoro.com) for the benefit of all concerned with outsourcing archiectural drawings:
+What has been the hottest trend in the offshore outsourcing world over the past 12 months?
Offering value-added services with regular BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) jobs has been the hottest trend in offshore outsourcing over past 12 months. For example, we are providing architectural design and planning assistance with new ideas in building construction to firms that outsource architectural drafting to us (Arkians Architects-www.arkians.com).
+What is the next hot trend in offshore outsourcing? Partnership between onsite client and offshore company to handle, accommodate and execute a division of the project independently; more like a joint venture- by distributing project planning, execution and delivery amongst the two.
+What is the biggest mistake companies (clients) make when moving offshore?Underestimating the intellectual capacities of the offshore development agency has been a great mistake. Thankfully, our (www.arkians.com) clients recognized our capabilities at an early stage and were enthusiastic about our contribution to their intellectual treasures!
+Communication and team collaboration both continue to be one of the primary success factors in offshore outsourcing. How can US - EC firms improve communication with their offshore outsourcing vendors? What is your firm doing to improve communication with your clients? How important is it to have some formal tool, process or other to help facilitate effective communication between offshore vendors and onshore clients?
Format tools of communication are very important even amongst companies in countries that speak the same language, due time-zone difference between the two. This causes delay in communication and response to queries and clarifications from the clients takes a longer time. Online message tools and discussion boards with built-in translators with customized query management can solve the problems. We (Arkians Architects-www.arkians.com) make use of the following:
A. Online communication panel where clients respond to queries recorded in a database on a day-to-day basis.
Graphic and textural explanations and clarifications to doubts.
Completed Drawings uploaded on an FTP server at least once a day for viewing and comments by the client.
For complicated projects, we may arrange for Videoconference or Web-based AV interactive programs between our work force in Arkians India (www.arkians.com) and client project managers in US.
Archiving of such communication for future reference.
Establishing a nomenclature for most frequently used commodities that figure in development. Making a standardized library of some modules and units with a nomenclature understandable by our clients.
+Intellectual Property (IP) theft continues to be one of the leading fears of onshore clients. In reality, how big of a threat is IP theft to onshore clients? What is being done in your country to improve IP protection? What are you doing to improve IP protection for your clients? What can onshore clients do to better protect their assets?
Offering IP security is the most important aspect on providing a long-term solution to onsite clients and a healthy partnership between the two. India has stringent quality regulators like NASSCOMM, which credits companies that attain a level of trust with their onsite associates. Our company- Arkians Architects (www.arkians.com)leaves no stone unturned in attending to this aspect by the following means:
A dedicated team working for a particular onsite firm on architectural drawings is at a location distinct from the rest activities of our company- Arkians Architects.
All CAD drawings created are intellectual property of the onsite client and is not shared with any other domain of our company- what so ever. On completion of a job, all renderings and drawings of the project are returned to the onsite client and deleted from our systems, except those kept as a testimony of our service by consent of the client.
The computer networks have distinct user-groups to minimize sharing of files and breach of intellectual resources.
+Costs are skyrocketing in most offshore outsourcing hotspots. What can be done to mitigate the rising costs? The Indian government takes active care on this issue by increasing skilled human resources when there is a scarcity; and regulating prices for services offered to onsite clients. But in my view, increased costs are indicative of a superior service and an upward trend in the market that should be accepted.
+Most offshore outsourcing engagements have poor success metrics and onshore clients are now starting to demand tangible proof of some ROI. How much of cost savings do you believe the offshore outsourcing industry (on average) delivers? How should onshore clients measure ROI? What are you doing to demonstrate tangible ROI to your clients? The savings are at least 30 percent as direct costs on human resources and infrastructure and an indirect (intangible) 15 percent as reduced liabilities, overheads, bottlenecks, insurance etc. ROI should be measured on both the above indices of direct-tangible savings and indirect as well.
+There has been a belief among onshore clients that offshore outsourcing vendors are not good at innovation or R&D type functions. Do you agree? Why? Do you forsee a change?I earnestly protest this belief, as outsourcing will eventually progress towards a healthy partnership between onsite and offshore offices- where both parties divide jobs and liabilities on mutually best terms. A majority of American software developers are Indians who provide design level ideas, R&D inputs and innovations into the product. The same developers are active in India and doing a job with professionalism and cost effectiveness. Intel, IBM, Microsoft and many big companies have opened R&D centers in India, thus tapping her highly skilled and economical work force.
+Staff turnover rates are incredibly high in many offshore outsourcing hotspots. How much of a concern should this be to onshore clients? What are you doing to lower the turnover rates in your firm? What can a client do to help you reduce the turnover rates in their offshore outsourcing engagements?Turnover, if it implies iteration (inverse of retention) is a progressive phenomenon where the best employers get to have the best employees. We are working with other firms of similar interests to establish a consortium for standardizing employee benefit programs and emolument structuring. Though it may not work to out to our expectations, we hope to initiate stability in this area.
+Employee morale in firms outsourcing work overseas is extremely low. Even though onshore firms may take steps to ensure their employees do not feel threatened by moving work overseas, the employees are still suffering from morale issues. What advice can you offer onshore firms to help them improve the morale issues caused by moving work overseas?
Graduate to finer aspects in business, which are over and above the outsourced processes, is a step that I view will eventually be taken up by onsite companies. It is because they will get more time and money to invest on aspects previously un-researched due to several (budgetry) constraints. This will lead them to seek able intelligentsia who are paid higher to overlook creative and previously unexplored areas along with broader work/management over the offshore development partner; leading to increased intellectual processes inside. pushing push-up the need of a higher and finer education amongst the onsite country to meet the demand that will enrich the economy of that country.
+There are literally thousands of offshore outsourcing firms poping up around the globe on a yearly basis. Additionally, new offshore outsourcing hotspots (such as Russia, China, Mexico, etc.) are gaining a foothold in the market. What impact do you believe these new companies / countries will have on the existing industry leaders? What do new firms or countries need to do to be competitive in the global outsourcing market? What do the incumbant firms - countries need to do to keep their leadership?Offshore sites like India will continually benefit from the trust and quality it has already accumulated over the years of its service to the developed world. Newer markets like Russia and Mexico will need to compete with us in every way, which I think is a mammoth task. Despite the pop-ups, the outsourcing markets will settle and revolve around only key-player-countries that offer distinct advantages to a particular set of clients-local or global
+If you were to expand your fulfillment operations into a country you currently do not have a fulfillment presence in, where would you go? Why?
We may go for Malaysia and Philippines due to supportive government and encouraging policies.
+What is the best advice you can offer a company moving offshore for the first time?Outsourcing is a minimal risk program if you want to go a bit slow. Investments can increase later as trust develops between the onsite and offshore companies. Moreover, off-shore companies are very competitive, enthusiastic and eager to adapt to the most comfortable service for their clients.
+What is the best advice you can offer companies with current offshore outsourcing engagements that want to improve their ROI?
Asking agents to look for competitors who can offer better service. _________________ OUTSOURCING YOUR WORRIES, NOT DESIGN! |

Outsourced projects are nice, but it's better if you focus on your local job market and construction standards verses overseas where you have no idea of the local conditions and seismic area. In the US we understand that you can charge $5/hr for your fees from India based on the fact that you do not pay taxes nor is the cost of living the same.
