Hello all,
As a new CAD manager for a small aluminium production company in Norway, I have the terrible task of investigating whether we should switch from the excellent 3D CAD program we've been using for more than 10 years (Solid Edge [SE]) to another (Solid Works [SW]). WE HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO COMPLAINT with SE itself.
But a number of our users insist this would be best, mostly because of SW's popularity. Support for SE in Norway at least seems to be seriously waning while support for SW is strong. Also, DAP integration with SW seems to be better for the types of machinery we use.
At the same time, we are confronted by the desperate need to climb into a PDM file management system because we have in many ways failed to manage our CAD files for many years. We're actually considering 2 transitions - SE to SW AND unmanaged CAD to CAD with PDM.
My questions:
1. Is it possible or recommended at all to switch 3D CAD systems while working with 30,000 legacy files? If it is, what are the major pitfalls and how can we navigate them?
2. Is such a switch possible at the same time as upgrading to a PDM managed system? The arguement I'm hearing is, "if we're going to have to go through all the files and clean them up anyway (admitedly an enormous task) will translating them to a new CAD system so bad?"
3. Has anyone out there done something like this?
Thanks for any help... |
