its always good to start at the basics. what is your project about? get a few friends that you have confidence in and brainstorm. write down your every thought so you can see the progression from one thing to the other as it evolves. personally, I think that a design concept is a set of rules set up by yourself for you to follow. Some professors will preach otherwise, but honestly, a concept is something personal. the final product shouldn't be screaming '_________' (insert concept here), but it should click if someone were to read about it or be told.
the brainstorm is just like the evolution of design. it is probably the most interesting part of a design in my opinion.
take the rules that you have set, and try to follow them. there are times that it is just impossible to do which is completely fine. just try to resolve the problems you started with your concept in mind. the whole idea behind conceptual design, again in my opinion, is to keep things on one track. it allows your design to have a sense of 'one' instead of being bits and pieces.

hope this helped Very Happy

design concept..
well, i feel design concept is something totally personal..
ya its true its not necessary that your design should scream its concept..

i think its the gut feeling you have about a thing..
just the first initial thoughts.. let it be as wierd as it can be.. doesnt matter
just hold on..keep on scribbling keep on sketching things as it comes out.
As the time passes and as more and more papers go down..
you will arrive at a place where you can start linking..
May be thats the place where your concept wil start..

For me concept is the ray of light i have to follow.. to keep things in harmony throughout my design... It helps you to guide your design in a certain direction.

So just dont worry and dont run behind big words...
ask yourself what do u feel and never start without a pencil and ur sketchbook..

all the best..

I dont know, I might be wrong, but for design concepts you cant go far wrong looking at le corbusier for inspiration. Look at the villa savoy and his five points in architecture, he always got a nice clear concept for the building and then wrote a book explaining it. A good concept (in my opinion anyhow) can usually be summerised in a simple smallish sketch, or at least that helps you to get it clear in your own head. hope that helps a little!

as much as I try to keep away from a one word concept, I have tried them all... here is what I've had for some of my projects:
-Heart: my first conceptual design. we were designing a firehouse just after 9/11 and I felt, PERSONALLY, that firefighters fit every definition of the heart.
I will say that it wasn't easy to work with this one.

-Collision of interest: I've used this on two designs so far. The first time was for a public library that was to lie on a site that was a buffer between a small neighborhood and a retaild district. the site couldn't be more different on each side. one side screamed for expression while the other side was obligated to be subdued. I looked into giving each part a density and how they reacted with one another in a non-violent collision. Diagramming results was key.

the second time I used it, it was for a park pavillion between (funny enough) my loft complex and some historical homes in Marietta, Ga. The way of life between these 2 ways of living is remarkable. In one case, you have young and active people always on the go. In the other case, you have older people that make it outside only to get their mail. I sat down and first found their similarities (everything from movement to construction techniques). I then found their difference. Then I looked into what made each place unique (building material, activity, etc). I was sure to diagram the entire way. I then resolved the conflict.

the other response said above, conceptual design is to keep a harmony in your project. don't worry how 'fucked up' (for lack of a better term) your idea is. just stick with it and allow it to evolve (no matter how hard it is to do). I have not been able to sleep many nights b/c I needed to resolve the issues I created. just be sure you document the entire process... it will be the most interesting thing about your project!!!

Thanks a lot! I think I got the idea Wink

Can you guys provide the list of different materials which gives different qualities to a building? (E.g. Glass gives the building a modern 'feel', etc.)

any traditional material can be used in a modern/contemporary way.
look at the expression of those materials and their connections... emphasize them... make them bold.

a set of rules that YOU set up to help aid you in coming to the final design solution. it is a way to keep consistancy in design so that you do not have too many good ideas bunched together with no solid meaning. at least this is what a 'design concept' is for me. the concept is like the controlled variable in an experiment. it is a variable that should be present in every equation you try to solve throughout the design.

ask yourself why and how the concept itself would solve or influence ideas in the problem you want to solve. does the concept have a way of organizing data (floor plan, structure grid, etc). This makes me think of Meis and his use and understanding of the external structure in the blade of grass which led to his curtain wall stiffening like in the Seagram's building in NYC.

it is a very hard thing to do, and I assure you, there will be times that it will frustrate the living hell out of you. I still am solving problems for projects I've turned in years ago.

i guess in the end it is a very intense thought process geared at making your design unique.
